Overview
Liverpool Chess Club
Liverpool Chess club today is thriving in the heart of Liverpool at our home of “The Cornmarket Pub, Old Ropery, Liverpool, Liverpool, L2 7NT which is a tremendous venue in terms of location, vibrance and its perfect atmosphere for playing chess.
We have teams represented in all Divisions 1, 3 and 4 of the Merseyside Chess Association league and a team in the first division of the Wirral Chess League catering for players of all standards.
Liverpool are current Merseyside First Division champions 2025 again for 3rd year running and Knotty Ash Cup Champions 2025. Liverpool had not won the First Division since 1985, so this is an incredible achievement for the club.
The Club was founded on 15th December 1837 in the Lyceum building in Bold Street, the club is one of, if not the oldest existing chess club in England today although a number of other clubs were founded before 1837 and records indicting the club existed by at least 1813.
In 1892 Liverpool was seen to be the largest chess club in the world with 150 members.

New members of all abilities are always welcome, and we’re always happy to welcome new players to the club.
Come along and join us any Tuesday from 7:30pm.
Free Coaching
Free coaching is available to all club members, with our senior players offering their experience and expertise to help you develop your game.
Throughout the year, the club also runs internal competitions, giving members of all abilities the opportunity to compete for trophies and earn places on our various club teams.
Junior Coaching
Junior coaching is no longer held at Liverpool Chess Club.
It now takes place at North Liverpool Academy on Wednesday afternoons and is open to juniors across Merseyside.
